Nino van de Rijzen looks at the whole picture. He has a phenomenal amount of knowledge about trees and gardens—and also the impact of tree roots on nearby buildings. This proved essential for our project, which was the question of trimming (or possibly even removing) a magnificent tree which overtopped the height of the next door building, three stories high. I did not want to lose the tree! But I was not sure what would be the best solution, especially with its possible impact on the house foundation. All of these aspects were considered. Nino came over twice to talk with us about it, and several weeks later he and a colleague trimmed the tree. While all of this was being decided in various discussions, he consulted with the building inspector (we have a historic building in the center of Delft), and with the gardeners (who were replacing all of the bricks in the garden, which the roots had pushed up to impossible angles). It was fascinating to watch the process! The gardeners saved for him a huge pile of tree roots that they had removed, so that Nino could see what had been taken away (this was to balance the amount he would cut from the branches above). The gardeners respected him enormously! It was then glorious to see him and his colleague go up on ropes to impossible heights and trim branches. (He then took them all away!) I am so happy every day to see the tree standing in the garden. The project was all done in the best possible way, thoughtfully and with courtesy.

Nino, through his knowledge, dedication, and excellent network of colleagues, helped me save a beautiful elm tree. This elm had been incorrectly assessed, and there was no Dutch elm disease present at all. Now this elm has been saved and hopefully will live to be 500 years old.
