Dear Internet, Are these people gaslighting me? I'm a Dutch American dual citizen, and I have been trying to open a Rabobank account for about a month now. After multiple failed "afspraken" and "we'll get back to you"'s, I managed to get someone on the phone long enough to get to the contract stage. I was told I could wait 3-5 weeks for the document to arrive by post, or go to my local branch. So I go to my local branch, but they tell me, seriously, that all the Rabobank printers in the Netherlands are down. ALL OF THEM. They can't print the contract, and I can't sign it with a mouse. I have a digital copy of the signature, but they won't accept that. Nor will they accept a signature on anything but the sacred contract they can't print. They will not email me the contract either so I can print it out for them (the 3rd largest bank in the Netherlands). They don't have a stylus either (again, 3rd largest bank in the Netherlands). So maybe, in 3-5 weeks, I'll get a contract in the post. Are they really this incompetent, or is this an elaborate way to tell me they don't want my business? Either way, you're probably better off just giving your money to a random bunch of kids you meet on the street than with Rabobank.

Friendly, knowledgeable staff, the ladies sometimes explaining things over the phone, but unfortunately, they don't say anything and do it too quickly. Look at the only gentleman who's often there; he explains everything very kindly, you can take notes, and he's very helpful. You could learn a thing or two from these ladies. There are six of them, but two of them prefer to sit at their own desks and help customers remotely. These two ladies also have no connection with customers, which is a shame. I've had these two, and it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. If you ask for certain things, they'll ask you to give them a piece of their mind. They'll be happy, like, "Oh no, I have to do something now." I'm honest and just say, "Could you be a bit friendlier?" It's not appreciated, but as a private individual, I just come there for business. If these ladies don't like this work, they should do something else, like cleaning. Then they'll know what work is. Treat everyone as you'd like to be treated, that's what I'd tell these two ladies.

You were present at the presentation of the new "Thuis" project, a 40-home development in Veenendaal, to provide mortgage advice. Many new residents accepted and were even able to borrow more than requested. One business day before the deadline, you decided to withdraw the financing. This would put an estimated 20 families against the wall. If you're not willing to finance, you shouldn't be present at the presentation with a pious face. Disgraceful! Shame on you, Rabobank!

I have banked with Rabobank for almost my entire life. Unfortunately, Rabobank's service has become so extremely poor that I could no longer remain a customer. In recent years, Rabobank has worked hard to make its bank and customer service increasingly less personal. And it is becoming more and more palpable that Rabobank's customers exist solely to make money, not to provide them with service. Newcomers like Triodos, Knab, Bunq, and ASN show how it SHOULD be done. Despite the fact that these banks have no branches at all, they are many times more personal than Rabobank and are much closer to their customers. On top of that, surely it is no longer acceptable in this day and age for a bank to continue supporting projects that cause deforestation in the rainforest—the lungs of our earth—and to keep making investments in the factory farming industry: "In recent years, Rabobank lent billions of euros to companies that produce or sell broiler chickens and caged pigs." I can no longer stand behind Rabobank.

It's been a nightmare trying to get the right person on the phone with this bank. When you call, you get a computer that asks what you want. No matter how clearly you speak, it doesn't understand a word. After a few tries, you're transferred to an agent. This agent has just learned Dutch and understands even less than the computer. After a long wait and being transferred after transfer (25 minutes later), you finally get someone who understands everything, except the boiling point you've reached. Very customer-friendly.
