Sometimes it feels like a moral obligation to warn others not to make the same mistake. In 2016, I registered an additional business activity through this office. I was advised to establish a private limited company (BV) due to perceived increased business risks. This BV was no longer actively used after two projects. In the following years, I repeatedly inquired whether it was wise to terminate the BV. The office's advice was always to retain the BV for possible future use. In 2025, I received a notice from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration that no corporate tax returns had been filed since 2018. This resulted in significant fines, totaling approximately EUR 20,000. Failure to file mandatory returns is a matter that an accountant normally oversees, precisely because the filing obligation for a BV remains in effect, regardless of the level of business activity. After I contacted the relevant employee directly about this, no substantive explanation was forthcoming. Even the usual support provided to the Tax Authorities – such as sending an explanatory letter – was not offered this time. In subsequent communications, the employee indicated they had assumed the BV no longer existed. This assumption was incorrect and inconsistent with the periodic discussions we had had on this matter. Because I received no clarity, I engaged another accounting firm. They submitted all the missing tax returns within a week. The Tax Authorities subsequently reduced some of the fines. The foundation of a good accounting firm is continuity, duty of care, knowledge of the case, and the timely identification of tax obligations. Professional vigilance is essential, especially when a company is inactive or has limited operations. In this case, the care expected of an accountant was not met. Unfortunately, after a formal notice of default, I have not yet received a satisfactory response. Based on the overall facts, I can only give my experience one star. Forewarned is forearmed.
